The niche melee characters could fill would be the tank role, but currently full cover provides a whopping 60% evasion boost, meaning that in my personal opinion, the best "tank" character you can create is actually a stationary HMG/Flamethrower user. Otherwise outside of Ranger variety reasons, and ammo conservation reasons, why am I playing any type of melee character over a ranged Ranger who can sit behind cover and shoot? CHA Brawlers who can go out and stun a dangerous enemy, then retreat are the closest thing to a pay off for the archetype as a whole, while also doing silly amount of single target damage when they finally reach their threshold. High risk characters need high risk payoffs. The AP cost of closing in on a enemy, dealing just okayish damage, then having to retreat like every Ranger behind cover to have a chance to survive really diminishes their playability. The melee archetype as a whole feels too fragile at all stages of the game (brawlers included). However, early game they only feel mildly more powerful at best on surpreme jerk. Melee characters (Blunt and Bladed users) on the other hand are meant to feel more powerful early, at the expense of some power late. To each their own right, and I understand Brawlers need something to distinguish themselves from Melee characters. I just don't like carrying a dead weight around until they magically hit a OP state and then you can finally play your character. You can unlock furry of blows by level 6, if you go all in on it with 8 int, but it's really irksome to me personally. This isn't meant to exclude other difficulties, but I feel the archetype as a whole (including Brawlers) isn't up to scratch, especially on higher difficulties.ĭisclaimer: I know Brawlers are powerful, and I've played one, but my issue is they are only powerful offensively (and defensively sorta via stun spam I guess) and you don't feel like you have a 4th party member until you unlock furry of blows and tier 3 brawling weapons. I wanted to open up a discussion about melee builds on supreme jerk difficulty.
